Metal Bulletin’s 5th Central and Eastern European Steel Conference - Poland
Abstract
A number of speeches at conferences over the last twelve months have asserted that restructuring of the Central and East European steel industry has all but stopped. By and large, but with a few exceptions perhaps in Poland and the Czech and Slovak Republics, these are assertions with which I would agree. Therefore, I would like to focus today on a single but extremely important related issue - the matter of the drive for industry restructuring, or the pressure for restructuring to happen. On this subject, we feel there are important questions that should be asked both about responsibility for restructuring (the question about who is in the driving seat), and about capability to drive restructuring forward (thus enabling all passengers to be on board).
