Peterborough Utilities Inc. (PUI) appointed Hatch as the Owner’s Engineer for the construction of the 10-MW Lily Lake
solar farm in Peterborough, Ontario, whose Power Purchase Agreement was contracted under the Ontario Power
Authority’s Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP).
The Lily Lake solar farm was built on two farm properties and features two types of solar panels. Both types use a durable
and weather-resistant anamorphic thin film to collect solar energy.
Hatch provided Owner’s Engineer services for the construction of the 10-MW Lily Lake solar farm in Peterborough,
Ontario. Hatch verified that the solar farm be constructed to appropriate specifications and standards to ensure the
technical integrity of the facility.
The scope of work included:
- Review of EPC contractor’s engineering package
- Owner’s representative on construction site
- Acoustic assessment and completion of the Noise Certificate of Approval application
- Phase 1 environmental site assessment
- Validation of the project energy output (to enable the Owner to obtain financing
- Verification of loading capacity of structural components under adverse weather conditions
During the design review phase of the project, Hatch provided valuable services to ensure that all aspects of the design
complied with all Canadian Standards Association codes, and ensured that all environmental site assessment (ESA) approvals were in place. Design changes proposed by Hatch were also accepted by PUI, which reduced losses throughout
the system and increased the facility’s annual energy production.
Commissioning took place in three phases in late 2010 and early 2011.
Lily Lake is one of the first utility-scale solar farms built in Ontario, contracted under the RESOP program—precursor to the
Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program.
