Abstract
Birmingham Steel Corporation (BSC) acquired American Steel and Wire in late 1993. The
acquisition was seen by the management of both companies as the first step in expanding the combined companies' position in the quality bar and rod market. In 1994, an integrated project team consisting of BSC, Sumitomo Metals and Hatch Associates was assembled to define a facility to roll 600,000 tons per year of high quality bar from billets produced at other Birmingham facilities.
