Abstract
Although an improvement over the traditional shaft furnace, the Midrex shaft furnace design still allows non uniform temperature and flow fields to form in the cross-section of the furnace. By making modifications to the cooling and reducing gas inlet and
outlet devices, both simulations and lndustruals trials showed a significant Improvement in temperatuer uniformaity, gas flow behaviour, and overall flow product quality.
This translated into a reduction of 7-9% in natural gas consumption, a throughput increase of 13-17%, and an improvement in the reduction ratio of 6--8%, when Implemented in furnaces an electrometal/urgtcal plant Starly Oskoi, Russia.
