Studies for Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal expansion

Aurecon Hatch has been retained by DBCT Management to provide engineering services to investigate options for the next planned expansion of the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) at the Port of Hay Point, 38 km south of Mackay, Queensland, Australia.

DBCT has supported coal mines in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland since the establishment of the original 14 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) terminal in 1983.

DBCT exports approximately six percent of the world’s seaborne coal, making it Queensland’s largest coal-export terminal and one of the highest-capacity coal-export terminals in the world.

In the last 25 years the terminal has undergone several major expansions to increase terminal capacity for high-quality metallurgical coking-coal en route to overseas markets. The recently completed DBCT 7X project (an Aurecon Hatch EPCM project) increased the terminal capacity from 54 Mtpa to 85 Mtpa.

The current project will investigate the next planned expansion to increase terminal capacity above 85 Mtpa. The expansion will potentially be a greenfield development near the existing terminal and linked at the offshore berths.

The scope consists of operational mode analysis, materials-handling configuration layouts; site earthworks arrangements; and studies to identify options and prepare comparative capital cost estimates.

This work will form the basis for further feasibility investigations.

The work will build on studies already undertaken by Aurecon Hatch and will include modeling terminal operations to determine throughput capacity increases.

The assignment is scheduled for completion by the end of September.
