Abstract
The modern workplace is always changing, and at an increasing pace. We can be assured that how we work will be different
in 20 years time – just reflect on your own experiences. Globalisation and technological advances continue to change the
playing field. Change can be seen as positive or negative, either way it will continue to happen and for our own health it's
best we adapt and are proactive.
Successful companies in the future will create an 'adaptive workplace' with 'adaptive people' that engage and benefit from
change. Companies that resist may at best survive, although it will be painful or at worst disappear.
Just like the chameleon if we (companies and individuals) have the ability to adapt to the situation, subtly blend into our
environment, avoid over reaction, be calm, be alert and use a deliberate and focused approach, then we will also benefit
from change.
Hatch’s approach to facilitating change to create an 'adaptive workplace' has three fundamental components:
- A sound technical solution to make the change. This is physical and tangible (document, plan, methodology or
technology.)
- An acceptance strategy to ensure people own the solutions in their hearts and minds. This is intangible and it is about
people’s beliefs and behaviours to determine if they really want to be involved.
- A facilitative style to coach, enable and engage people to bring the best out of them. This binds the technical solution and acceptance strategy together.
Using these three components in a deliberate and balanced approach ensures successful change is not left to chance.
