Abstract
Orica is one of the largest suppliers of min-ing chemicals in the world. The Koora-gang Island Site was established in 1969 and consists of a Kellogg ammonia plant, three nitric acid plants, two ammonium nitrate plants and an atmospheric ammonia storage tank. It is located in an industrial area approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) from the centre of Newcastle, the 6th largest city in Australia. The site’s major product is industrial grade ammonium nitrate for the mining industry, located in the nearby Hunter Valley.
