Abstract
Simulation of continuous events has been applied to a wide range of processes for many years. The simulation of discrete events, which deseribe many mining situations, is relatively new. A number of software languages are available as are some software packages. Focussing on the need of the mining engineer to plan and design mining ventures, the history and present state of the art for mine system simulation is explored. Several examples from actual mining operations are presented to show how simulation models are assisting the mining engineer to make important decisions for mine planning and mine design.
