Abstract
The stainless steel industry is facing fundamental restructuring as it begins to lose its
exclusive speciality steel status. The industry has been devalued by the polarisation of the
product mix essentially into commodities and specialist grades, driven by evolving
applications and the need to reduce prices. Producers now face the choice between pursuing
cost leadership through process simplification and scale, or pursuing a specialist steel niche
business structure.
