Abstract
The chemical process industries (CPI) often require the cooling of solids, for example, following a dryer, calciner, roaster, or combustor. Such cooling can be done in various types of equipment. Selection and design of the appropriate system for each application depends on the operating temperature, the solids' properties, chemical environment, heat-transfer rates and energy recovery potential.
This article describes several different kinds of solids cooling technologies, discusses their applicability and limitations, and compares how each could or could not be used in three hypothetical examples.
